Ethiopian chalcedony is popular among grinders due to its vibrant colors and translucent luster when polished: from delicate lavender to rich violet to soft blue-grey, often with the typical silky shimmer. What you see in the photos is the rough state – the full depth of color only emerges during grinding and polishing.

Chalcedony belongs to the quartz family and has a Mohs hardness of 6.5 to 7. It is therefore significantly more robust and forgiving than opal: no heat sensitivity, forgiving during pre-grinding.
